1) Basically the student did not learn anything during the semester
because the teacher did everything through PowerPoint. With everything being on
PowerPoint, the students had no way to experiment during class because Mr.
Dancealot would not allow for the student to participate. The author tries to
make the point that not everything should be purely online. With classes like
dance, weight lifting, disc golf, you need to be more hands-on and not so much technology
based.
2) What he means that with technology, it’s not hindering
the students from learning but under the right supervision it could be helpful
if the students are engaging in the work.
- Entertaining vs Engagement
- Internet is the main source.
Technology can be very beneficial
for a student to grow in the studies, but when using technology to play games
and watch hours of funny fails it can hurt the development of the student. In
the video it compared and contrasted entertaining and engagement, with both
being passive. While entertaining was meant for enjoyment and a way to escape having
to problem solve, Engagement means to learn and is a way to problem solve.
The internet is now the main source
of information for the students. The internet is basically a 24 hour service
were the students can look up anything they need to know about, as appose to
the teacher you only see them for 90 minutes a day in the high school setting.
But as teachers, according to the video, we need to be the filter. We need to
teach them the right way to use the internet by find safe and reputable
sources.
3) The
teacher is used for guidance and shows the students how to build their own
network. The teacher also shows the student how to find rebuttal information on
the internet. Without the help from a
teacher, the student would not know what to look for during their research.
Also, the teacher will guide the students through the work and not just leaving
the student to become overwhelmed or stressed out. Networking is a great way
for the student to learn amongst their other classmates.
4) With
technology in the classroom, you can connect to the different parts of the
world. For example, when you are taking a foreign language class, you can
connect to students that live in the area in which you are learning their language.
With the internet and technology the way
it is now, everyone can benefit from it. If you do not know a definition of a
word and you do not have a dictionary, you can just perform a Google search for it. Edutopia
is a great site for teachers. It has ideas, topics, and videos for every age
group.
5) I would
say that the elementary students are ahead in the learning race. When students
start using technology at a young age, it benefits them a lot in years to come. The
elementary students would already know how to properly engage during research
by the time they are in high school. They were using technology in a classroom
setting before undergrad and grad student at South were.
